An Effective Diet Can Decrease Your Chronic Pain Symptoms
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition which can affect a person’s joints, tendons, and even their ligaments. Clinical research around fibromyalgia has shown that this condition can cause people to suffer from headaches, gastro intestinal issues, visual disturbances, bloating, shakiness, issues falling and staying asleep, and even forgetfulness. Currently, there are a number of medical treatments available for fibromyalgia patients, but these can often only temporarily relieve symptoms. So, many fibro patients have also opted to make a change in their diet. Research has shown that there are certain diet changes which can help to significantly reduce a patient’s symptoms.
Step 1: Try to Avoid Sugar and Sugar Substitutes
This can be difficult for those who have a bit of a sweet tooth, but avoiding sugar and sugar substitutes has been shown to decrease fibromyalgia pain. Some of you may be wondering how sugar can cause pain, so let’s take a closer look. Interestingly, sugar (and sugar substitutes) promotes yeast activity, which means that their consumption can increase your chance of developing a yeast infection. People who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia are already prone to developing yeast infections, due to an increase in yeast activity. By avoiding sugar (and sugar substitutes), you can decrease yeast activity in your body.
On another note, there was a study published in 2010 which reported two separate cases where ingesting Aspartame (a sugar substitute which can be found in Diet Coke) actually increased patients fibromyalgia pain. When the sugar substitute was completely avoided, the patients experienced a complete alleviation of their pain.
Step 2: Add More Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids can actually decrease a patient’s inflammation and thus lower their fibromyalgia pain. These fatty acids are commonly found in fish and fish oils. Researchers have noted that omega-3 fatty acid can also help human cells keep their structure and function, which will lead to even less fibromyalgia pain.
In 2010, the Clinical Journal of Pain published a study which showed that consuming around 2400-2700 mg of Omega-3 per day could reduce pain caused by fibromyalgia, burn injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and cervical radiculopathy (herniated disk).
Step 3: Avoid MSG
This additive is commonly used to preserve foods and add extra flavoring. Studies have shown that ingesting MSG can increase pain for people with chronic pain syndromes. In 2001, medical researchers conducted a clinical trial with four fibromyalgia patients. During the trial, MSG was completely eliminated from the participants’ diets. The results showed a complete resolution of fibromyalgia pain in all of the participants! Interestingly, scientists have known for a long time that MSG has an excitatory effect (“additive effect”) on neurons which has been linked to chronic pain syndromes.
Lastly, Try the Living Food Diet
As the name may have suggested, this is a diet which is abundant in raw fruits, vegetables, berries, and root nuts. It avoids too much sodium or cholesterol, but it is high in fiber. By increasing your healthy fiber intake, you will promote a healthy increase in gut function. This way, you effectively decrease the amount of time that any harmful substances can be absorbed.
Studies have shown that fibromyalgia patients can experience a significant drop in joint pain and stiffness by using the Living Food diet.
