Join Us for the 2014 Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis in Birmingham

Kids get going at the Jingle Bell Run in AlabamaDo you know someone living with arthritis? There are more than 55 million people who have been diagnosed with some form of arthritis here in America (that’s 1 in 5). This weekend you have the opportunity to join our staff as we take part in the largest holiday 5K series supporting the fight against arthritis.

The holiday season really is a great time to give back and this is a community that could use your support this year. Did you know that there are 1.2 million arthritis sufferers in the state of Alabama alone? The Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis is a really great way to kick off this festive and fun time of year!

The sad truth is that it’s not only adults who struggle daily against the chronic symptoms of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). Nearly 300,000 children under the age of 18 are affected by some form of juvenile arthritis (JA)– 5,000 of whom live here in the state of Alabama.

Some Fast Facts on Arthritis

  • Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the U.S.
  • The word “arthritis” actually describes more than 100 different diseases and conditions which can impact the joints and connective tissues.
  • Arthritis is the most common source of chronic pain that veterinarians treat– 1 in 5 dogs also suffers from the symptoms.
  • The annual cost of arthritis has grown to a staggering $128 billion.

Raising Funds for Families Fighting Arthritis

Santa spreads cheer at the Birmingham Jingle Bell RunThis year alone, the Arthritis Foundation has pledged to raise $8 million in research funding. The city of Birmingham is well known for supporting and funding research initiatives and our city is on track to achieve it’s goal of raising $200,000! This money will also help fund local support programs for Alabama families that are combating these chronic diseases every day.

Arthritis can be more limiting to a family than heart disease, cancer or even diabetes. Symptoms such as chronic fatigue and inflammation in the joints can make completing even the most simple daily tasks extremely difficult. But it’s not only the physical symptoms which pose a problem. Caring for a family member who has been diagnosed with a chronic illness can be extremely stressful and draining. With your support, we have the power to improve their lives and help them achieve everyday victories over arthritis.
